The Four Problems of Animal Welfare

“Why Veganism?” by Eva Batt (1908–1989)

Written for Here’s Harmlessness: An Anthology of Ahimsa, first published in 1964 by the American Vegan Society. This essay offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the vegan movement. Eva Batt, residing in England, became a vegan in 1954, just ten years after the term was coined. In the decades that followed, Batt made major contributions to the spread of veganism, including two cookbooks, and played several roles within the UK Vegan Society, including fifteen years as chairperson.
